Bracing

Have you experienced an injury or gone through a surgical procedure that requires you to keep a part of your body immobile or have assisted movement during the healing process? If so, bracing therapy may be precisely what you require to get on the appropriate path to healing.

Bracing involves the use of an external supportive device that helps to stabilize a joint or body part. It’s common for patients to have a brace fitted for them following an injury or surgery to help support or protect the area from any unwanted movement or stress.

How Does Bracing Work?

Bracing works by binding the body area in question with a brace, clasp, or band to help limit any expansion and therefore reduce any possibility of force produced in the muscles.

When used properly for a certain amount of time, bracing can be extremely helpful at moving a patient’s healing progress along rapidly and properly, eventually leading to full function and range of motion. Bracing can help relieve painful areas of stress and pain by reducing mobility, interrupting the spasm cycle, and promoting a better healing environment.

After patients are braced properly, they are then encouraged to participate in strengthening exercises as well as brace therapy to take advantage of both practices.

Used on a short-term basis, brace therapy does not promote weakness. Instead, it is designed to do the opposite, as long as this type of therapy is performed within the parameters recommended by the bracing team at TOPS. Eventually, patients will be weaned off of the brace and will experience significant strength improvements as a result.
